June Program: Common Sense HR | For Business Leaders

 

Common sense – it’s a term we use when encouraging others to make smart decisions, but at what point do we, as HR professionals and business leaders, reflect on what that actual means?

 

Who doesn’t want to be described as a “common sense thinker” or as someone who has “innate common sense” – really it’s the ultimate compliment. It means people can see the simplicity and objectiveness of your thoughts and actions. As HR and business leaders we impact people’s daily lives – with our policies, management style, recognition, processes and programs. Come learn how to reflect and move forward with a common sense approach that will increase your professional credibility, inspire people to seek out your opinion and make your days and nights easier at work and in life. We’ll be focusing on the 10 pillars of common sense, their order and importance, as well as how to apply them.

Melanie Olsen, 3M

Current Responsibilities
Melanie Olsen is a Human Resources Manager, specializing in Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A), for 3M Company. She has more than 15 years of Human Resources experience spanning various industries including finance, hospitality, manufacturing, technology as well as the airline industry. In addition to M&A, Melanie has held HR leadership roles in recruiting and onboarding, university relations, global HR system deployment, talent development programs, employee relations and employee mobility.


Professional and Community Involvement
Melanie is an active member, former board member and Past President (2014-2016) of the Twin Cities Society for Human Resources Management (Twin Cities SHRM).


Education
Melanie holds a bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University in English and Political Science. She also holds multiple certifications, including an MBA certificate from the University of St. Thomas, Opus School of Business, a Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification from the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) and is a Society for Human Resources Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP).





Carrie Patton, Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A 

Current Responsibilities

Carrie Patton is the Director of Human Resources for the law firm of Winthrop & Weinstine, P.A.   In this role, Carrie leads the Human Resources team and guides the firm both in its overall human resources strategy, as well as day-to-day tactics.   Among her responsibilities are  compensation and benefits; policy development and administration; employee relations; performance management and recruiting.

Carrie has more than 20 years of experience in the human resources profession, and has worked with a diverse range of companies and industries.

 

Professional and Community Involvement

Carrie is an active member of the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM), where she currently serves the Twin Cities chapter as a member of the Board of Directors and Immediate Past President. In addition, she is Treasurer of the Minnesota SHRM State Council.

 

Education

Carrie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Bemidji State University, and her Master’s Certificate in Project Management from The George Washington University School of Business. She is a SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP),  and certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
