TCSHRM October Partner Program: Relationship Capital:   Building Partnerships for Success

To foster lasting change in our organizations, we need the buy-in and support of others. While we are constantly interacting with people at all levels, when was the last time we took an inventory of our relationships - our influence network? How willing are we to be vulnerable and let our guard down to build solid relationships? In this workshop, we’ll reflect on how we are allocating our time when it comes to building relationship capital and how we can ensure a meaningful return on that investment.


  Attendees will:

  • Correlate investments of time and energy in building real relationship capital with professional success
  • Identify an internal networking framework for leadership acumen success
  • Determine gaps in organizational network
  • Increase your own personal confidence in influencing others
  • Learn strategies to build broad and deep networks across the organization to strengthen relationship capital

Amy Roberts    

Amy Roberts is the Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing and an equity partner of Dale Carnegie in the North Central US. She works hard at helping team members get to the bottom of the presenting problem and provide the right solution for our clients. Our clients regularly note Amy's genuine desire to understand their culture and world and her ability to customize the program and delivery to be company specific. Because of this, many of the clients she works with have been long standing relationship with continued partnerships. When Amy's not working, she enjoys spending time with her Hubby and kids and can often be found enjoying the nice weather in Okoboji with her family.

Eric Harkins 

Eric Harkins is the President and Founder of GKG Search & Consulting,
a Minneapolis-based consulting firm that helps organizations Get talent, Keep talent & Grow talent. During his twenty-five year career in corporate America, Eric has held leadership positions ranging from assistant manager to chief talent and chief administrative officer. During his career Eric has lived in five states: Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, California, and North Carolina.  

Eric calls his career a “fun journey” that gave him experiences at Target Corporation, KOHL’s, Best Buy, UnitedHealth Group, Jack Link’s, The Nerdery, and VICTRA (the largest Verizon retailer in North America).   

He started GKG Search & Consulting to help clients focus on the one true goal he believes every leader has: To make sure Monday morning doesn’t suck. He believes companies need to spend their time building a Cool Place, with Cool Projects, and Cool People.  

Eric and his wife Jennifer live in Shakopee and have two children: Laurynn (20) and Jack (17). When Eric isn’t working with clients improving workplace culture you’ll probably find him hanging out at a family cabin in NW Wisconsin.


Kristin Nordling

Kristin Nordling 

Kristin Nordling joins the AP team as Vice President, Human Resources. Kristin has more than 25 years of experience in human resources in a variety of industries, including construction services. She is equipped with a depth of knowledge across human resources, strategic leadership and communication.

Kristin was previously Chief Human Resources Officer at Dessert Holdings. Prior to Dessert Holdings, Kristin held the role of Vice President of Human Resources and Safety at USI Building Solutions. She also held human resources leadership roles at large Minnesota-based companies including Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cargill and UnitedHealth Group.

Kristin holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Bemidji State University and has served on several volunteer committees throughout the Twin Cities.


Julie Thiel

Julie Thiel 

Julie Thiel is a Vice President of Talent Management who works with business leaders at all levels to create a culture that drives organizational success. Julie believes the best results are achieved when leaders are authentic and every employee is engaged in self-reflection.

Julie has been leading change to transform talent at Schwan’s Company since 2015. She has over twenty years of HR experience and driving innovation in large companies like Target and RSM McGladrey. Julie also understands the unique needs of HR in smaller organizations, having held the top HR roles at Analysts International and Fargo Electronics. Julie leverages this experience to implement organizational changes that increase recruiting efficiency, develop talent pipelines, reduce complexity and create deeper connection within work teams.

Julie is sought out as a speaker on leadership development topics due to her engaging communication style. Her audiences have included development conferences, webinars, university student groups and executive education programs. Julie has a passion for workforce development and most recently served on Board of Directors for the Greater Metropolitan Workforce Council. Julie was recently recognized as a 2020 Top Women in Business by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. When not at work, you can find Julie at the local softball field, cheering on her daughter, Grace.

Julie holds a master’s degree in Human Resources Management and undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois.  


Amy Valek

Amy Valek

Amy Valek began her career at J&B Group in January of 2007, initially working in marketing and then with the family foundation. Prior to COVID-19, she was the Learning & Development Manager, responsible for the learning and development initiatives company-wide. She worked with Business Unit leaders and the HR team to design and implement development strategies to support the values and vision of the organization to drive growth, support business needs and increase individual and group effectiveness. Currently, as company-wide development programs are on-hold due to the pandemic, she is focusing her attention on operational training needs within the Manufacturing and Distribution areas of the business.

Prior to joining J&B Group, Amy served as the Director of Capstone Programs, at Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest, where she oversaw the experiential learning programs for the company.

Amy grew up in Minnesota, attended college in Wisconsin and currently resides in Albertville with her family. She stays busy with her two children but in her “free time,” loves to read, exercise and spend time with family and friends. Her biggest learning: no matter what you are going through – things always have a way of working out in the end.
